Version 1.61 Released - 13 July 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • IMPROVED FRAGMENTED FILES ONLY ALGORITHM
It now finds fragmented files in Logical Cluster Number order. This results in this method actually improving contiguity of data since lower LCNs are made available first to place files as they are defragmented.

  • ADDED ABILITY TO DEFRAG A SINGLE FILE ONLY
This is accessed by clicking on a "red" fragmented file in the cluster analysis list after analysis. This option is added to the fly-out box. Useful for when you just want to defrag a particular file.

  • ADDED ABILITY TO DEFRAG ALL FILES IN A PARTICULAR FOLDER ONLY
This is accessed by clicking on a file in the cluster analysis list. These options are added to the fly-out box. Useful for when you have just installed a new program which often results in significant fragmentation of the files just installed.

  • ADDED RESPECT LAYOUT.INI TO 'AUTO' DEFRAG METHOD
This further improves optimization result of this one-click method

Version 1.54 Released - 1 June 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

BUG FIXES

  • Corrected a problem with Vista systems where reanalysis/filewatcher was kicking in too often during a defrag resulting in defrag runs taking too long.

Version 1.52 Released - 11 May 2007

  • REPLACED PROGRAM ICON TO REFLECT THE NEW DESIGN

BUG FIXES

  • The problem with the program not running when users had Logitech mouse and keyboard system tray apps running has been corrected. Was caused by the license protection mechanism and not the program itself.

Version 1.48 Released - 29 March 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • ADDED AUTOMATIC CPU/RESOURCE USAGE
In this revision we reworked the CPU/Resource usage routine which was causing some stalling problems on some dual core processors. We also added an AUTOMATIC resource usage which now throttles CPU usage. This enables you to defrag while you are using your computer with very little performance penalty.

Version 1.47 Released - 24 March 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • SIGNIFICANTLY ENHANCED DEFRAG SCHEDULING
UltimateDefrag scheduling interface and functionality has been significantly enhanced to directly use Windows Task Scheduler interface. This adds more flexibility for scheduling defrags - including idle periods.

  • Minimize To System Tray (Hide When Minimized) Function Added
You can select an option to Hide When Minimized and UltimateDefrag will move to the SystemTray. A right click on the SystemTray Icon provides some control including pause, resume and stop functions.

  • Detect and Disable (upon user's consent) Windows BootOptimize state in Windows Registry.
It is recommended that you answer "Yes" and disable BootOptimize since Windows attempts to optimize boot file layout every 3 days. This undoes UltimateDefrag's file layout optimization by rearranging files.

  • When you go into Tools=>Options menu to select optimization options, the Options dialogue box remembers the drive that you have selected in the main user interface. This avoids inadvertently selecting options for the wrong drive.

  • Changes made to the configuration are now automatically saved immediately and on exit. Previously this would only be saved on exit resulting in possible loss of last changes made to UltimateDefrag configuration in the event of abnormal termination of the program.

  • Confirm Before Exit. If you attempt to exit the program when file operations are in progress you will be warned that file operations are currently in progress.

    BUG FIXES

  • A bug in the Recency Method where data was placed on inner tracks was archiving even if Respect Archive was not selected.

Version 1.46 Released - 7 March 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • ADDED NEW FILE HIGHLIGHTER FEATURE
By Selecting Tools=>Options=>Highlight a File - you can select any file and highlight its position on the disk display. This feature is useful for power users wishing to see where on the drive a particular file is located.

Version 1.44 Released - 21 February 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • ADDED NEW OPTISEEK TECHNOLOGY INCORPORATED INTO NEW AUTO METHOD
OptiSeek is a new proprietary technology that automatically tunes the file layout of your hard drive to achieve file access performance equal to the track-to-track seek performance for your hard drive for most file access. OptiSeek has been incorporated into an AUTO method which automatically sets the optimally correct percentage of files to archive and to high performance based on the amount of data on your drive. Performance can also be tuned with a slider. This new method is ideal for end users who want to defrag without all of the added options while at the same time maintaining a optimally performing hard drive. Further information is on page 33 of PDF manual.

  • Removed "Days since access" in Drive options screen and replaced with % Most Used and % Least Used files.

  • Added Zoom Functionality to Disk Display. Right Clicking on the mouse brings up zoom functions for the disk display.

Version 1.39 Released - 17 January 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • SIGNIFICANTLY INCREASED FILE SELECTION CAPABILITIES
Added ability to concurrently select files/folders as well as access dates and extensions in High Performance and Archive selection screen. This vastly increases flexibility of file selection for Archive and High Performance. For Example: for Archive, you can select all files not accessed in the past 30 days, AND files with extension zip AND all files in System Volume Information and Windows Updates folders (or any folder or file). This serves as a perfect way to, on a daily basis, place files created by daily System Restore Point updates out of the way to the inner tracks of your drives.

BUG FIXES

  • While stalling was reduced on some systems with V1.38, stalling may have been introduced on others. This has been corrected.

Version 1.38 Released - 11 January 2007
Updates and fixes in this release

BUG FIXES

  • Fixed a bug which was incorrectly handling the folders with similar beginning, i.e. if you have "C:\folder" and "C:\folder1", and put C:\folder as archive, then C:\folder1 would go into archive too.

  • Fixed MFT defragmentation bug, which wasn't defragging MFT properly under all modes except Consolidate

  • Fixed a bug in Consolidate mode which was causing stalling on some systems

  • Fixed GUI bug, which wasn't updating Start/Stop button properly

Version 1.36 Released - 29 December 2006
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  • Converted custom user interface to complete classic Windows user interface.
UltimateDefrag will adopt the Windows theme that is in use.

  • Changed Maximum Resource Usage Selector to a spinner that enables 1% increments

  • Moved Scheduler to Tools menu

  • Changed start and stop push-buttons to give dual functionality to the one push-button.

Version 1.34 Released  - 7 December 2006
Updates and fixes in this release

BUG FIXES

  • Some systems were experiencing Stack Overflow errors causing the program to terminate unexpectedly.
This has been corrected in this version.

Version 1.32 Released  - 23 November 2006
Updates and fixes in this release

NEW FEATURES

  1. Option To Respect the Windows Layout.ini File for Optimal File Layout.

The Layout.ini file is a file generated by the Windows prefetcher. Each time you launch a program or reboot your system, Windows prefetcher studies the file access patterns of each program launch or the boot sequence. It stores these files in the Prefetch folder with a .PF extension. Every 3 days, Windows will analyze each .pf file in the prefetch folder and will generate a file that lists the optimum file and folder layout on the disk. This file is called Layout.ini. Windows itself performs a boot optimization process every 3 days where it looks for a contiguous free space that it can use to place files required for optimum system bootup performance. This is however only a partial attempt and is not necessarily placed on the outermost tracks. When selected, UltimateDefrag will layout files in the entire layout.ini file in exact order as specified by the Optimal File Layout. These files are placed at the very outer tracks. The result of this is a very significant performance increase at bootup and during launching of most programs.

  2. Added Ability to Sort The Order Of File Extension Types.

When you wish to select files of a particular extension for High Performance (or archive), you can sort the order of these files by clicking and dragging. e.g. if you select all files with .EXE and .DLL extension for the high performance section, you can reorder the order that files are placed. If EXE is at the top of the list and DLL second, the program will (after archive has been taken care of first) lay out all files with .EXE extension first and then files with .DLL extension.

  3. Added Ability To Process High Performance And Then Stop the Defrag.

In the event that you may only wish to defrag, process and optimize the files you have selected for High Performance e.g. the Layout.ini file or files from a specific folder you may have selected for High Performance, you can have UltimateDefrag perform that only and then stop the defrag.

This has been added as an extra option under each defrag method.

  4. Added additional Statistics Tab under Volume Information.

These additional statistics are updated dynamically and provide such information as number of fragments and average fragments per file.

  5. Added screensaver mode.

When this option is selected, defrag does not run until screensaver becomes active.

  6. Added ability to change legend colors through a menu option

BUG FIXES

·        A bug in the consolidate method was causing some files to be ignored on some machines

·        Shut Down PC and Restart PC after scheduled defrag would not occur on some machines

·        Maximum Resource Usage was not displaying the default 100%

Version 1.29 Released - 4 November 2006
Updates and fixes in this release

  1. Defragmentation Stage Indicator added to top left corner of defrag screen. User can now see what stage of defrag is currently being performed.

  1. Clicking on a file in the cluster analysis frame has an option added “Open This Folder”. This will allow user to open the folder that contains that file. Useful for opening deeply nested folders quickly if there is a particular file of interest.

  1. Ability to change Maximum Resource Usage in 5% increments.

  1. When a Defrag is scheduled using the scheduler, post defrag options are now configurable.
    i.     No Action
    ii.    Exit UltimateDefrag
    iii.   Shutdown PC
iv.   Restart and run boot defrag

  1. Indicator displaying file that is currently defragged has been moved to the left to enable long pathnames to be displayed without abbreviation

  1. Ability to navigate disk indicator with arrow keys. By clicking on one of the cluster blocks on the disk display, you can pan around the disk with arrow keys

  1. Color change made to Directories and Folders in disk display in order for the user to be able to differentiate directories from regular files in the Disk Display.

  1. Option added to reset legend color changes back to default color.

  2. Debug logging now added – Ctrl+Shift+F12 will enable logging. This will write the defrag process to a file titled _Defrag.log in the root folder of C: drive. This file can be used to help tech support debug any issues.

  3. By default Fast Archival is set to checked. Fast Archive prevents complete rewriting and resorting of archive files. Instead – files are just added and removed as dictated by archive settings without rewriting the entire archive file list.
